Ecstasy / MDMA

MDMA ( 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) also known as Ecstasy, E, Molly, XTC, Crystal can be found as either powder or as a pill / capsule. These pills can come in different colours or be branded with logos. The main difference is that MDMA is usually powdered and ecstasy is usually found in pill form. 

The amount of MDMA when it’s in pill form is extremely variable and will often contain a mixture of other drugs alongside ecstasy which can cause other more dangerous effects.

How it is used

  • Ecstasy pills are usually swallowed however some people crush and snort them
  • MDMA powder can be snorted or usually dabbed into gums. It can also be swallowed by wrapping the powder in cigarette paper.

How it feels

Highs

  • euphoria, increased confidence, increased energy, increased affection, heightened senses

Lows

  • paranoia, anxiety, panic attacks

Physical symptoms

  • increased temperature
  • faster heartbeat
  • confusion or delirium
  • jaw pain and muscle tightening
  • nausea

Risks and the law

Risks

  • Can cause significant or extreme fevers, especially when cut with other drugs. This can lead to severe dehydration and organ failure
  • Abnormal heart rhythms can cause significant damage to the heart
  • MDMA broken down by the liver once in the body, this can cause acute or chronic liver issues if regularly used
  • Can also cause stroke, memory impairment, kidney failure and mental health issues
  • Can develop dependence and addiction to MDMA leading to larger dose consumption and consequently an increased risk of the numerous physical problems which can be caused

The Law

  • Class A drug
  • Possession can lead up to 7 years in prison and/or unlimited fine
  • Intent to supply can lead to life in prison and/or unlimited fine
