Understanding Chemsex
Chemsex refers to the use of specific drugs (such as methamphetamine, GHB, and mephedrone) in the context of sexual activity, typically within the LGBTQ+ community, although it can occur in other groups as well.
The drugs are often used to enhance sexual experiences and increase libido. Chemsex parties or gatherings are where these drugs are commonly consumed and they may last for hours or even days.
Risks associated with Chemsex
- Increased sexual disinhibition leading to higher risks to sexually transmitted infections including HIV and Hepatitis C.
- Drug interactions that can be unpredictable, including polydrug use and needle sharing.
- Reliance of chems during sex and reduced ability to engage in sexual activity sober.
- Poor mental health: prolonged use of chemsex drugs can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, paranoia and psychosis.
